Yes there is a certain similarity, an orientalness to some of these
works. I know that Satie visited Fontainbleau near the time that
Gurdjieff's Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man was at the
Priurre. I asked Ornella Volta this same question, and she said that as
far as she knew Satie was not a student of Gurdjieff. More likely the
similarity is one of time and place and the early fusion of eastern and
western cultures. Satie in his eastern influenced Rosicrucian
affiliations and Gurdjieff teaching his eastern learnings.
Satie probably did not knew of Gurdjieff's proformances of sacred dances
at the Theater Champs Elises in 1920 as Satie was nestled in at Arcueil.

To explore some more of Gurdjieff and his music, have a look at Amazon's site. There are some book reviews, record reviews and music samples.

Hi-
If anyone knows where I could find more information on wacky/invented
musical instruments Satie may have been involved with, I would be most
greatful.

There are two recent collections of Gurdjieff/deHartmann's piano music (both double-CD sets, and both on the Wergo label) that I'd highly recommend to fans of Satie's work. There may (or may not) be much in the way of formal qualities shared by the two composers, but their music does express similar feelings of calm, melancholy and joy.
But the BEST versions of G/deH's music are, in my opinion, those informal recordings made of deHartmann playing the works in the '50s. Perhaps harder to find than the Wergo, they are well worth chasing down. Released as a CD box set on the Triangle label out of NYC (mastered by ECM Record's prexy) -- incredibly beautiful.
Caveat: Just as you don't have to be a Rosecrucion to enjoy Satie, you don't have to be into the teachings of Gurdjieff to enjoy the music of Gurdjieff/deHartmann!

I am looking to find a recording by the Cammarata String Orchestra in which they perform a version of "Parade" in which there are audio samples of the H bomb explosion, hitler's speeches, typewriters, winston churchill. Do you know of which I speak, and if so do you know where I can find a copy. I was referred to you by Emma Rooksby, emma@merriweb.com.au
Thank You
Chris

Hello all,
This site continues to educate and enthrall.
Anybody know of any recordings of Uspud?
I can find very little information on this work,
which (apparently) was published in 1895.
Oh, also, has "Le Panthee", which Satie wrote
a "musical frontispiece" for, been reprinted?
With or without the music?
Thank you,
Tom (music student), Edinburgh.
I found a sheet music copy of something purporting to be "musique d'ameublement" in my local music library. It is subtitled "Tenture de Cabinet Prefectoral", which is listed in the complete works list as a separate piece. Are these one and the same? Are any recordings available?
Tom (music student, Edinburgh).

Chris,
The title of the album you're looking for is "The Music of Erik Satie:
Through a Looking Glass" by the Camarata Contemporary Chamber Orchestra.
Now that you have a title, I'm sure there is a used LP locator service that can help you find it. I found my copy two years ago at my local used record store.

As far as I know USPUD was never recorded or performed publicly by Satie. I did have the pleasure of performing it in a college "Scratch Ensemble".
