June 26, 2004:

April 1, 2004:
The news group is online again with a new design:
May 1, 2003: Updated some descriptions on the samples page. As some of you may have noticed I rarely update this site anymore. Only when it happens something extraordinary I will quickly update with the information that is provided to me. I also regularly visit the news group and try to reply to the questions there.
July 28, 2002: Robert Orledge, professor of University of Liverpool (UK), has just put the finishing touches to Satie's unpublished work 'San Bernardo', a first version of 'Espanana' dated '2 Aout 1913'. Of course, this is exciting news and an opportunity exclusive to Satie mailing list members. 50 deluxe numbered copies are now available, each in a special folder. Copies can be obtained through Orledge in return for a cheque or bankers draft for £15; $25; or 25 Euros. Cheques to be made to Robert Orledge, and sent to Windermere House, Windermere Terrace, Liverpool L8 3SB. [This is just to cover production costs, postage and packing, and cheque conversion where appropriate]. The Medecin malgre lui scores are now all sold. He has now made 3 conducting scores that open out flat, in case a production actually materialises... On the Satie front, he shall be writing an article for 'Cahiers Debussy no. 26' on 'Debussy and Satie in 1913' very soon, and while away on holiday this month he wrote a '7e Nocturne' in the style of Satie. This is entirely his own piece of course, so he shan't be publishing it. But it was great fun composing it and he is quite pleased with the result. Examples of San Bernardo will be put on the Satie site soon. I will let you know when these are available on my site. You can reach Robert Orledge at R.F.N.Orledge@liverpool.ac.uk
June 28, 2002: Ornella Volta has kindly sent me some prompt answers to some of the recent questions sent to the Erik Satie news group. As most of us know, Ornella Volta is the founder of the Satie museum in Honfleur (and former museum in Paris), the Satie archives in Paris, and author of many biographies on Satie. She is regarded as the most important Satie expert today. She has no computer, in fact she is afraid of these new modernities as the internet but she is fond of her fax machine, fortunately... http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/satie/newsg.html
April 23, 2002: Me and Ornella Volta (of Archives Erik Satie) have decided to initiate the fifth and perhaps last auction round of biographies and other rare material regarding Erik Satie at Ebay. If this auction becomes a success we will continue offering new auction rounds and new items. If it will not become a success, all the items will be sent back to the archives in Paris. So please take this opportunity and support us! Have a look at the items here: http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/auction.html
January 1, 2002: Now you can finally get some more detailed information on Robert Orledge's edition of Satie's Scenes nouvelles (1923) (his last unpublished orchestral score). There are only a few copies left for sale. Also, the fourth auction round is now up.
November 8, 2001: The third auction round has now started and will end on Nov 13. I have added a new item. Many of our items are now out sold. You may also order some of the items directly from that page. Robert Orledge has now only 19 copies left for sale of his beautiful unique score of Satie's Scenes nouvelles (1923). Take the opportunity and buy one before they are out sold. He will *not* reprint these as the prices only cover the printing and distribution costs. You can order these by contacting him directly: Robertorledge@aol.com
October 22, 2001:
The first auction sound became a success! Thanks to all of
you who have shown interest and bid on the items. The second auction round
is now up, ending on October 29. Two new items have been added to the list
and some others can be bought for fixed prices, for more details go to http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/auction.html.
October 2, 2001: The Satie auction has now begun! Have a look at the items for sale at http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/auction.html and place your bid!
I have also corrected many broken links on the samples page
September 17, 2001: Since a couple of months, Ornella Volta of Archives Erik Satie, Paris, has made an inventory of their collection of surplus material relating to Satie - books, concert programs, stamps, postcards... and she asked me to try to sell some of these on my Satie site. I gladly accepted. This is the first commercial sale by Archives Erik Satie. As a member of this mailing list you now have the opportunity reading all about this sale and look at the images of all the items at http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/auction.html before the auction begins. We will auction off everything at the respectable auction site Ebay. Please take this opportunity and make your bid and please inform your friends who might be interested as well.
August 30, 2001:
Exhibitional news from Archives Erik Satie, Paris: Also, an exclusive commercial sale by Archives Erik Satie of material relating to Satie under way. More details later.
August 28, 2001: I promised to return to you this month for some more details about Robert Orledge's limited edition (58 copies) of Satie's scenes nouvelles for 'Le Medecin malgre lui' (1923). It is a bit delayed but on the other hand Mr. Orledge has been working with this project since 1997 so a few more weeks make no difference... The nicely bound limited edition (beautiful laid paper) will be available for a price of approximately £58 ($83). As promised I will have excerpts from it available on the Satie site. I will give you more details later.
June 19, 2001: It is my pleasure informing you that at present the Satie expert and musicologist Robert Orledge is preparing a limited edition of Satie's scenes nouvelles for 'Le Medecin malgre lui' (1923) (full orchestral score) on good paper and nicely bound. This is Satie's last unpublished orchestral score and will be available in early September. I will get back to this subject in August and provide some excerpts on this site.
May 20, 2001: The Satie birthday festival 2001 at Teatro Miela, Trieste, Italy, is now documented on http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/miela.html
May 10, 2001: Latest news about the Vexations performance in Trieste: It will be performed by a computer and broadcasted through a script on Teatro Miela's server. It will start the playing and a page with a flash movie will show the progress at http://www.miela.it/vex/vexations.html (the webpage will be available very soon). Please note - you must have the Macromedia Flash plugin installed on your browser (usually this is the case with the latest versions). If this flash animation works you will be ready. Otherwise you can download the Flash Player from Macromedia's website and then close your browser and install it.
May 5, 2001: On May 17th it's time once again for the celebration of the birthday of Erik Satie. He was born 135 years ago! Every year Teatro Miela in Trieste, Italy, arrange a festival for Erik Satie with spectacular performances. This year they will among other things perform the complete Vexations, according to Satie's instructions, over the internet, so everybody worldwide have the chance enjoying that performance. I will be there myself and introduce the unique recording of Robert Caby's piano works (performed by Olof Höjer). By the way, I also heard that the pianist Branka Parlic will arrange another Vexations performance in Belgrade, not that far away, Serbia... (they are also thinking of an internet connection) Perhaps there is a connection with Teatro Miela or just a co-incidence?? Here is the complete schedule: Wednesday 16th: (Central European Time)
21.00 - 24.00 : overview of film production from the historical
avant-garde ( G.Dulac / V.Eggeling / P.Leni / H.Richter / M.Duchamp
/ A.Cavalcanti / M.Ray / L.Moholy-Nagy / H.Stork / J.Cocteau )
with live piano musical commentary. Thursday 17th: from 20.00 on: Birthday Party: 150 artists (painters, musicians, dancers) will participate giving their artistic contribution Furthermore everybody else from the general public will be asked to bring a present.
Relevant links:
April 7, 2001: In 1925, the 20-year-old Satie admirer Robert Caby became a devoted friend with Erik Satie. Later on, he wrote several articles about Satie in a time when Satie was more or less forgotten. In the 1960's he published through Salabert many of Satie's unpublished works, Gnossiennes Nos. 4-6 for example. What not many of us know is that Caby himself was a composer of many beautiful and surrealistic piano works. Many of these have also some apparent influences from Satie's earlier works. I have now produced a recording of a tasteful selection of Caby's piano works, performed by the well-known Swedish pianist Olof Höjer (known for his complete collection of Satie's piano works). You can now read all about this unique recording and the man behind the works. You can also listen to sound samples and be one of the first to order the CD (limited edition) for only $9.50. http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/cabyrec.html ...and some more news. Back in March 1996 I had a conversation with Salabert Editions in Paris about the internet and my Satie site. Now, finally (better late than never I say) they have launched their website. Their site may be a bit slow, therefore you can download their complete Satie catalogue (PDF/Acrobat format), which includes some photos and manuscipts on http://hem.passagen.se/satie/satie.pdf If you have the time and interest I also suggest that you read my brand new article about notation indexes, with a brief description of techniques developed by Harold Barlow and Denys Parsons. If you don't know what a notation index is: imagine you are humming a certain tune for yourself but have no idea about what that tune comes from or the composer. Then you need a musical dictionary which lets you find that certain tune, a so called Notation Index. http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/notation.html
February 6, 2001: Updated Ornella Volta's page with some information about the new extensive Satie book Correspondance presque complète.
January 21, 2001: Added music sample of the first movement of Danses de travers, performed by Alessandra Celletti, along with some interesting information about the piece.
November 15, 2000: The silent introduction film of Entr'acte, interval act of Relâche in 1924, is now available in the samples section. Satie and Picabia jumping on the roof, firing a cannon...
September 1, 2000:
Time for another Flash animation: Parade.
August 8, 2000:
Today I had some extra hours for disposal so I created another animation,
this time in colour and you will hear the rather unknown Modéré.
August 7, 2000:
I have now made my first animation experiment, a kind of music video
(yes, I know, Satie was there way before me...) with animated pictures
and music by Satie (Gnossienne No. 4). Check it out...
July 27, 2000: I just received a book from Ornella Volta titled "Variations Satie" (in French only) which is available through her exposition in Abbaye-aux-Dames (Caen, France). It contains lots of colour images of original manuscripts and 7 photos by Man Ray. 120 FF (17 USD). More yummy details soon on the Satie site.
July 11, 2000: New sample in the music sample section: Gnossienne No 4, performed by Branka Parlic. Also supplied some information by Darius Milhaud regarding Parade and Relâche.
June 11, 2000: Exhibitional news presented by Ornella Volta of Archives Erik Satie.
May 5, 2000:
I hereby welcome you to join the new Erik Satie news group!
It offers the following new features: Please note that this news group is not moderated anymore, so be prepared for spam submissions, spelling mistakes and inappropriate subjects... (I will however still clean up this board once in a while) Mailing list members will not receive any contributions anymore as the system simply cannot handle it. All contributions are however updated immediately so the main purpose behind the mailing list is gone. Mailing list members will however still receive news regarding all changes on the Satie site. I hope you will like the new discussion board. Any idea of how to enhance it is welcome.
February 28, 2000: Added in the manuscripts section an image of an envelope sent to himself, addressed "Parcier et Maître de Chapelle de l'Eglise métropolitaine d'Art de Jesus Conducteur", 1896.

December 30, 1999:
New article, by Ornella Volta: (reprint from R.I.M.F., 1987) A very comprehensive article, a must for every Satie fan. http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/article.html I wish to give my deepest thanks to Todd Niquette for his wonderful work of scanning and translating everything to me. Without him this article would only have been read by some Frenchspeaking researchers.
December 25, 1999: I recently discovered that some of the links on the music samples page where broken. The reason is the Yahoo - Geocities co-operation, which resulted in a different URL (well done, Yahoo!). This is now fixed... http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/samples.html By the way, a simply wonderful loooong article by Ornella Volta titled "Give a dog a bone" is soon available thanks to Todd Niquette who made an impressive English translation. More details later.

Sample of the month (August):
August 6, 1998: Ornella Volta of Archives Erik Satie in Paris has given me some information regarding "le Placard", the wardrobe, also known as the Erik Satie museum at 6 rue Cortot, Montmartre. Currently it's very difficult visiting the museum due to renovation. Mme Volta has however suggested me to create a virtual version of the museum available on this site. I find this very appealing and very exciting and will start working with this. Ornella will gladly co-operate and is open to any suggestion. Please share your ideas with me and the E S news group! Regarding the new Satie museum in Honfleur, it has become a success.

And drink some wine. I have had problem reaching Mme Volta's fax so I will send her a letter when in France, so hopefully when I'm back I may have her final permission to publish a page for her and Archives de la Fondation Erik Satie. She has made clear that she will try to answer any question from the news group once a month.
